Yoga Nidra

Deep Rest for Body, Mind and Soul

Yoga Nidra, often called “yogic sleep,” is a guided meditation practice for conscious relaxation. It invites you to rest in the space between wakefulness and sleep - a liminal state where the mind quietens, the body deeply relaxes, and natural healing can occur.

Rather than aiming for sleep, the goal is to reach a state of complete restfulness while remaining gently aware. Practised regularly, Yoga Nidra helps to restore balance, reduce stress, and rejuvenate the nervous system.

Yoga Nidra – Key Aspects

  • Guided Meditation: Each session is fully guided. I lead you through stages of awareness, inviting relaxation of different body parts, gentle breath awareness, and calming imagery.
  • Progressive Relaxation: You’re guided systematically to release physical tension and experience a profound sense of ease.
  • Breath Awareness: Conscious breathing slows the nervous system, grounding body and mind.
  • Visualisation: Imagery supports your mind’s creative and healing capacities - each session at Infinite Harmony is themed around the seasons, elements, or archetypal journeys.
  • Intention Setting (Sankalpa): You’ll be invited to plant a simple, heartfelt intention - a seed for transformation or inner healing.
  • State of Conscious Rest: Yoga Nidra guides you into a state between waking and sleeping, where insight and deep restoration naturally arise.

A Glimpse into the Practice

During a Yoga Nidra session, you’ll lie comfortably (or be supported in a chair) while I guide you through the stages of rest. There’s nothing to do - only to listen and allow.

Soft lighting, calming aromatherapy blends, and a nurturing atmosphere make each experience deeply restorative. Sessions often close with tea and quiet reflection, allowing you to return gently to wakefulness.

Where It Comes From

Yoga Nidra has its roots in ancient yogic and tantric traditions, with early descriptions of conscious rest appearing in the Upanishads (circa 800–200 BCE).

Tantric teachings (500–1500 CE) later developed it into a systematic meditative process for entering altered states of awareness.

In the 20th century, Swami Satyananda Saraswati modernised the practice, bridging ancient wisdom with psychology and neuroscience. Today, Yoga Nidra is recognised worldwide as a powerful therapeutic and meditative tool for healing and wellbeing.

Therapeutic Benefits

Yoga Nidra supports body, mind, and emotional health through deep relaxation and nervous system regulation.
Research shows it can help with:

  • Stress and anxiety reduction – Promotes calm, clarity, and resilience.
  • Improved sleep and rest – Helpful for insomnia and fatigue.
  • Pain management – Reduces perception of chronic pain and muscular tension.
  • Emotional balance – Supports mental health, including low mood and trauma recovery.
  • Cognitive function – Enhances concentration and memory through mindful awareness.
  • Hormonal and cardiovascular balance – Lowers blood pressure and stress hormones.
  • Immune support – Relaxation strengthens the body’s capacity to heal.

Practised regularly, Yoga Nidra becomes more than rest - it becomes a pathway back to harmony.
